The Natural Medicine Centre has developed a programme for treating the symptoms of Chronic Fatigue and ME. Homoeopathy helps Chronic Fatigue Syndrome patients to regain their health by stimulating the body’s innate natural healing abilities and immune system. As a result of this highly individualised approach to treatment, homoeopathy is, in many cases, able to bring about genuine recovery of CFS.
What is Chronic Fatigue?
As well as CFS, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is often also referred to as:
• Chronic fatigue and immune dysfunction syndrome (CFIDS)
• Myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME)
• Post-viral fatigue syndrome (PVFS)
These conditions can leave a person functioning well-below normal capacity for months at a time and with few treatment options. CFS is frequently misdiagnosed, in part due to the very variable symptoms that sufferers can experience. However in most cases the condition is characterised by a group of commonly occurring symptoms:
• Profound and prolonged exhaustion, not relieved by rest
• Loss of memory or concentration
• Unexplained muscle soreness
• Shifting joint pain
• Headache
• Sore throat
• Painful and mildly enlarged lymph nodes in neck or armpits
• Sleep disturbances
CFS has a cyclical tendency. The sufferer may experience lengthy bouts of illness, followed by periods of good health, only to find themselves back to square one within weeks or months.
Possible Causes
Two decades of medical research have still not produced a clear answer as to the causes of CFS. Consequently various theories exist and a variety of toxins, infectious agents and psychological conditions have been considered and put forward as possible causes:
• Immune system dysfunction / hyperactivity
• Virus infection (i.e., Epstein-Barr or human herpes virus 6)
• Hormonal changes
• Allergies
• Mild, chronic low blood pressure
• Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia)
• Iron deficiency anemia
• Genetic factors
• Psychiatric or emotional conditions
How is CFS Treated Today By The Medical Profession?
To date, no pharmacological agent has been shown to be a reliable, effective treatment for CFS. Medications are therefore limited to providing partial symptomatic relief (e.g. of headache, muscle pain). The most commonly prescribed medications for managing CFS are antidepressants, steroids, corticosteroids and analgesics, none of which are capable of ‘resolving’ the condition.
